Before the rain left
a last gasp of thunder
shook our home and bones,
wrenched us out of our day
as we huddled on the floor.

We stole looks at each other,
heard windows slam,
a door that tried to close
but stayed open.

The thunder stopped
and a frozen sky shone too bright
as we tapped about to make sure
nothing lay broken.
