The mountain heaves as sand is pushed higher,
one side is steep and the other slowly caves
toward a tiny island circled by waves, watching
to see if it will stay deserted, if they might overtake it
before rain crowns the mountain with a small crater,
and loosens sand that fills the ocean surrounding
the tiny island that has held its ground and now,
with a sand bridge, has joined the proud mountain
in its imperfect form and lays itself open to storms
it can withstand in its greater mass.
