I’ve run twenty-one marathons
and next Saturday I start another
on legs pretending they’re still young.
I’ve been married sixteen years
with many days questioned and mended,
but ready to audition for my part again.
I’ve given my daughter imperfect dreams
and lessons I’ve rehearsed with myself
over and over before I’m out of time.
I’ve worked three careers most of my life,
finding ways to keep them afloat
no matter if the tide is low or high.
Why do I keep trying?
It’s an honor to reinvent my new starts
and still be in the running for the parts.
